Nice tablet with some limitations

I have owned a Nexus 7 but wanted a larger screen so was intrigued by the economical Chinese branded tablets that are invading the market. The specs are impressive, the price unbeatable so after doing some research on the various brands out there decided to buy the Pipo M9 Pro. Here is my review:
Positive:
- It feels well built, not as plush and solid feeling as the Nexus 7 a but there is a lot of attention to detail.
- The touch interface works very well - there were a few hiccups (see negatives) but as long as you are aware of its limitations they are acceptable. I was concerned that being a Chinese tablet there would be some issues in getting started (language), but out of the box there were no problems at all as the default interface isthe regular Android in English.
- Everything works as in the Nexus 7 out of the box, and there are some notable improvements - volume control on the screen (in the Nexus it is only via annoying to control buttons on the side of the unit), a Chrome-like browser that is Flash enabled, File management apps, and an instruction booklet in English.
- Wifi is a much better than the Nexus 7 - make sure you choose "Off" for "Access to my location" under "Location Access" in your settings - otherwise Wife will slow down considerably!
- Screen is amazing - seeing photos on this thing compared to my excellent HP 24 inch IPS monitor is like a blind person seeing for the first time!
- Speakers are OK - Can't understand how people expect Spectacular sound out of such a small footprint - excellent earphones are included as well.
Negatives
- When I received the tablet the power supply did not work. It is not a usb powered supply like most new hi-end android tablets, rather a very cheap generic Chninese power supply - so I wrote to Pipo and received a response immediately offering to send a new one from China. I just went and bought a new one locally and it worked fine. Nice though to see that the folks at Pipo cared!
- In the first few days of use the screen froze once - and soon afterwards an icon also froze as I was trying to delete it. I was pretty upset at first as this never happened with the Nexus, but subsequently found out that the Chinese tablets are a work in progress - there is even a community of loyal Pipo fans that are dedicated to upgrading and improving the software. There is even a reset feature in the back of the tablet - something the Nexus does not have or need.
- I miss the fully rubberized backing of the Nexus - the Pipo is plain hard plastic - a fingerprint magnet and not as pleasant to hold as the Nexus.
- Cameras are so-so, good in daylight but lots of noise in interiors - Nexus is marginally better in noise. Has autofocus, panorama and some other goodies which Nexus doesn't have.
- The software is a little buggy - my experience with Nexus has been seamless, so to have the screen freeze was a bit upsetting. But once I saw that the manufacturer and a dedicated community of folks are out there improving it I felt better - and since then I have also had no problems. Just don't expect the seamless performance and upgrades you get with a high end model - be prepared to do some work.
- The power cord is right next to the on-off button. This was a pretty poor choice in design as it can be a bit annoying at times to be moving the power cord out of the way to turn off the machine - not a deal breaker but not a wise design choice either.
- The onn-off button very easy to press vs the Nexus which needs a very firm push. If you carry the tablet in a loose case it can turn off accidentally if you have it in standby mode.
- No button volume control. I think the ideal solution is to have both a physical volume control as well as on the screen. The Nexus only has a button on the side, the Pipo a screen version. If I have to choose I like Pipo's better but sometimes I wish it was on the unit as well. Other Chinese tablets have both.
In conclusion: I have no doubt that Pipo is an honest manufacturer and has put out a very good tablet at half the price as the high end competition - but some sacrifices have been made and there are bugs which are being worked on as we speak. All in all a very good buy

AWESOME TABLET!

The Pipo M9 Pro is simply Awesome! It is worthy of 10 stars. There is no reason to buy "THOSE OTHER GUYS" when you can get a tablet that's just as good if not better from Pipo, for a lot less money. Just go compare the specs and you'll see. We all know that no experience or product is perfect especially when it comes to electronics. With that said, If your seriously considering this Tablet then there is something you need to take into account. It will take some effort and patience on your part if you have any trouble at all with the tablet because the Company is based in China. BUT! The info and support is out there if you just go search for it. It's just not as easy as 1-800-HELP. But if you buy it through Amazon and from a highly rated seller, you'll be just fine. For the record, my Pipo M9 Pro has been FLAWLESS!

A Competitive Tablet that will probably increase its prices

First let me say that I have never used anything Android, so I've had to go thru a bit of a learning curve. I've had this for about a month now,so most of this review will speak of things other than the screen resolution and seamless surfing,etc. But I should mention that I didn't like the way it was packaged, sliding around in the styrofoam box wrapped in tape. Needed a full charge, after the three+ weeks to get here. Then again, it passed the shake test. Also, it didn't come with the instruction booklet that some customers received with their tablets.
That said,the Pipo is pretty nice. The more I use it, and read up about the O.S. and apps, the more I've learned how to conserve power. Same concept as a previous reviewer mentioned about a fast WiFi. But I had to change my data plan ($20/mo more) so I could use wireless tethering and hotspots. The lock-out is ISP dependent I think, so check your plan if you intend to use your phone to attach the tablet. You can always use a USB cable for file xfers. It has 2GB of RAM. I've somehow used half of it. It has about 27GBs of usable internal SD card space (Nand Flash). I have yet to try the external SD card slot space.
It came with a screen protector on it. All I had to do was peel off the temporary covering on top of the shield, labeled step 2. I wasted some money buying a 3pk before it arrived. And even the back is covered, a nice touch by Pipo.
If I had to do it again, I would have got the Pro 3G. I don't like dongles. I haven't priced a phone adptr, but it's probably equivalent to the increase in the cost of the 3G tablet. I can see using this as a phone on a mobile share plan. If you do go for the 3G model, shop around because the 3G model has gone up $40 in 3 months.
There's lots of chinese apps on it plus a chinese version of google play store, along with recognizable apps. lots of bloatware too.
Warning: One serious problem is even though it has Flash 11.1 loaded, it doesn't work,and Adobe has stopped supporting new Android devices. Check Adobe's site for specifics. looking at the Flash app stats, it has zero data or cache built up. Somehow it has not been used for anything. Maybe someone could comment on this for me/us.
Also, apps use so much data in the background that it becomes significant very quickly. The google suite (9 apps and counting)is brutally hungry eating up data. From nov 01 to nov 08, I've used 1.02 GB (all apps) Fortunately most of it was on my wifi. I really recommend that you spend a month closely tracking Usage (in settings) as well as Apps (also in settings). It has some great charts and graphs.
UPDATE: Nov 14, 2013: My PIPO labeled case arrived. For $10 it's okay. Except the edges partially cover the task bar on the bottom, and the notification areas on the top left and right. Probalby shouln't buy it.
SERIOUS UPDATE: Nov 14, 2013 -- Updating this tablet is really complicated and time-consuming. I suggest downloading the users manual from pipo.com and read it. Might be difficult finding it. mostly chinese. Also, I found out there is no support from pipo. I have to deal with the reseller for any service or support. Something to consider. This is from pipo's own site.
