4a nice, capable tablet with some quirks
By Mike Bern
I am having this tablet for over two weeks now, and here are my impressions:

The good:

1. Screen is excellent. High resolution, not dim - I use mine at around 70% brightness level, good, not oversaturated colors. Using a remote desktop program, I am able to see the entire 27'' screen of my work computer in it's full 2560x1440 glory. Text is still readable and I can use the supplied pen to click on those tiny buttons. The screen on this tablet is infinitely better than HD screens. Is it better than full HD? It's probably depends on one's preferences, I would think there is still a noticeable difference.

4. Toshiba TrueNote - the note taking app on the tablet. It may lack some advanced features, like inserting pictures, but otherwise nicely done. In default configuration, it has four notebooks, but more can be added. Sometimes, 'ink' appears with a slight delay, but overall it's easy to use, has decent character recognition software and is able to export notes to a number of applications (mail, office, etc).

3. Charger. The tablet would not charge through USB cable, it uses a dedicated charger. The tablet fully charges in 2-3 hours, which would not be possible with USB (AFAIK). The charger is similar to laptop ones - it has two parts and the cable is very long, so I can use the tablet even when it is connected to an outlet. Spares are available on Toshiba website for $40, which is ok for an OEM product.

4. Speakers are good enough to produce 3d surround effects when watching a movie (but see below).

5. Micro HDMI.

The bad:

1. When I received the tablet, I was dismayed at its performance. My Android phone (also a 4 core CPU, but a snapdragon) was running circles around it. Turned out that the default settings are heavily optimized for the battery life. After switching to the max performance profile, it runs much smoother.

2. Speakers are soft. They are ok for a quiet environment, for an environment with a background noise (say, a working AC unit) not so much. The speakerphone on my phone is a way louder. There is an option in the setting - 'Audio Enhancements/Toshiba Auto Volume Adjustment' that mitigates the problem to some extent, but still it is not enough.

3. It does get warm when watching a video, but it is not noticeable when I use it in its case.

4. Camera is not particularly impressive. Don't care about it though.

5. Ports are hard to access when tablet is in its case.

The ugly:

1. No root and a locked bootloader. Root is needed for some applications, like comprehensive backup solutions. Locked bootloader gives a feeling that Toshiba is leasing this tablet to you, not selling it. When support is dropped, you stuck with a decent, capable hardware and obsolete software. Toshiba uses sealime.ko kernel module, which is a port of SE Linux to android, which is, in turn, was developed by NSA to protect the government computers from being compromised by hackers.

People like me invest in android and not in apple because it's a more open architecture. Sony, Samsung, Asus and others understand that very well and try to be user/developer friendly. Locking bootloader may save some money on maintenance but it drives away enthusiasts/influencers/devs. I hope Toshiba will listen, after all their motto is 'Leading Innovation'.

4great powerful tablet
By wally
I bought this tablet on the day it came out. The screen is gorgeous, I'm even able to read in sunlight. There are power saving features which allows you to extend battery life. The tablet is very responsive, is a nice weight and is great for students or people in business. The stylus is very sensitive and feels similar to writing on paper. I was frustrated with the device, there seemed to be quirks that have since gone away. The tablet would show that it was connected to wifi but when I used my browser I was unable to connect to the net. The same thing happened with the app store. I called Toshiba and was instructed on two seperate ocassions to factory reset the tablet. The tablet now seems to be working well both on my home wifi and on my verizon jetpack. I would recommend this tablet to others. This is not for someone that wants the smallest lightest tablet on the planet. The total weight is around 1.45lbs. The tablet is using a tegra 4 processor there are not any games that will utilize the power of he tablet yet.

2very good tablet with some not so good software.
By S. George
**Update July 28, 2013** -- See bottom --

The Specs on this tablet are fantastic. quad core processor, 2 gig of ram, 32 gig storage, 2500x1600 screen resolution, active digitizer pen. Ok so it is thicker then a few sheets of paper, and toshiba is notorious for locking down the boot loader. no real reason to need root the tablet as it does not have a 3g radio in it.

So my review. over all its great. the think neww is not really a problem as I put it in a case so having a mega thin device was not going to be high on my list of priorties. I bought this for the screen resolution and the digitizer pen.

The screen is amazing! no problems with bleed like the last model excite had the pen works great (wish they would have made a spot to put it) battery life is ok but it is good for the day of hard use.

The Pen works but to get good use out of the pen it requires software. This is why I only gave it 4 stars. their pen software is a little lacking.. ok a lot lacking.. I have a Note 2 as a phone and there is leaps and bounds difference between the software.

in fact at this point I don't use the toshiba software I use third party apps for everything to do with the pen.

so the pen works but they could make it better.

Good camera's front and back speakers are way better then anything I have heard on a tablet.

So in summary it looks like Toshiba might be back on track with there quirky devices that make you just want to buy them. they don't really push the envelope in technology it like they make bulges in odd places.

**July 28th --
Discovered that the video camera will not focus the camera at resolutions 720/1080p it does focus the camera at 480 resolution.

Called Toshiba tech support. the said that yes it should work in that mode try doing a Factory reset. ok so to do that you loose everything that have on your device. So I get off the phone with them and install a app back up app. Reset my tablet and try the camera, no luck.

Called Tech support back and they said to send them my tablet and they would send me a new one they would process the RMA and get everything going. Ok I would give them the benefit of the doubt. they would not do a cross ship.

After getting off the phone I went to the Toshiba site and started looking around in the support area. If you are aware of the toshiba sites then you know that each and every site that toshiba runs requires you to create a separate account. again terrible.

I discovered that other people are having the same problem and are reporting it on the support forums. the call center did not know this and did not care when I told them. if it isn't in there little book they can not help you.

so at the end of the day the phone rings and it is toshiba support saying that because I used the toshibadirect credit card to purchase my tablet they will not be able to send me a replacement all they can do is process the refund and then I can purchase a new one.. this has the side effect of not getting into a high priority on the new one for shipment. and then I would have to pay the shipment again. BS

So all in all I have had a very bad experience with Toshiba. I can confirm that Toshiba support is bad, very bad. in the world of electronics we the consumer depend upon the manufacture to stand behind there products and support them. I think that toshiba forgot that when they starting cost cutting. I have owned toshiba products in the past and have enjoyed them, not so much with this one.

I will be sending my tablet back and not getting another one from toshiba. All of the great features that this tablet has mean nothing if they do not work and I/WE can not get support from the manufacture.
