5Excellent price/performance Android Tablet!
By M. Vallad
It's a 4.5/5 star product but I'm rounding up because of the price/performance/value factor.

This is an excellent tablet for the price. About as good as it gets in this price range. I purchased from Amazon right after Christmas 2011 for $158. It's a steal at it's current price of $136 through Amazon Marketplace!

It's not an Ipad or Samsung Galaxy Tab so don't expect that kind of power or features at this price point. This tablet would probably suit that majority of users just fine. After a month of ownership I'm still very pleased for the amount I spent. I have a relative who has had one just as long and loves it. It gets used 2-4 hours everyday.

A note on Amazon App Store and Android Market.

I've read some negative reviews and forum posts about it not having Android Market factory installed. This tablet comes with Appslib which is a limited app store. From what I've read it does not come with Android Market and some Google services because it is expensive to have it certified for such. These savings are passed on to the consumer by keeping the the price of the tablet down. However, this tablet is very capable of installing and running both Android and Amazon App store without rooting (jail-breaking) it. I had both installed the first day I got it.

Amazon App Store is as easy as connecting to wifi, open the browser and search google for "install amazon app store", the 1st or 2nd search result will have you installing it in seconds. Alternately (using the browser) you can navigate to the Android app store section on Amazon and click the "get started" link in the upper right of the page. Lastly, you can use your computer and email it to your web based service such as Gmail or Yahoo then use the tablet's browser to log into that account and tap Amazon's download link in the email.

Android Market is a bit more involved and requires a few free files that are available from at least a few sites online. Just Google search "Arnova 7G - how to get android market" and the 1st result is a forum with all the info. Read the whole forum thread. It only takes 10-15 minutes total.

Pro's

Excellent value
Great performance for its price range
Capacitive screen
Can be rooted with custom ROM
Comfortable to hold
Two forward facing speakers
Build quality - metal frame, back plate and front bezel.
Kickstand
Micro-SD expandability
Amazon App Store and Google Market can be installed without rooting.
Plays games, Netflix, Crackle very well.
Plays Adobe Flash (Flash 11 with the new firmware from Arnova's site)
Aftermarket accessories are available

Cons

Power adapter port and headphone jack are the same size and located right next to each other.
Location of power adapter port and headphone jack
Limited size of internal app storage unless flashed with a rooted ROM.
Control menu takes a small amount of screen real estate because of the lack of physical control buttons.
Forward facing camera only
I little heavy (due to it's solid construction)
No HDMI port
Manual is pretty basic.

The Review

The tablet itself feels comfortable in the hand especially when viewing horizontally. The built quality is excellent! It feels very well made and sturdy. The internal frame, screen bezel and rear case are made of aluminum not plastic. There's nearly no flex at all. Unfortunately, it's a little heavy because of this (13oz). Personally I'm happy to trade a few ounces of heft for the rigidity/quality.

The only "button" is the power/standby lock slider. Basically hold it to the left to power on/off and slide it to the right locked position for standby. There is no volume rocker or dedicated buttons for Home, Settings or Back. Arnova opted for onscreen control of these functions through a status bar/menu that's always at the top of the screen (even while playing games or streaming movies with Netflix). The menu is small but does take up some real estate on the screen. I was afraid this would bother me but it hasn't posed any problems to date and I only notice it when I'm thinking about it. Some may see this "streamlined" design as a plus - there's no physical buttons to accidently bump, makes for a smaller device.

The WIFI is stable and has good range for what it is, like that of a decent/modern smartphone. It's 802.11g and not the newer/faster 802.11n, but this is to be expected at this price point.

It has a capacitive screen that is responsive and accurate. Multi-touch (pinch and zoom) works well. There's no lag and it's very accurate with games like Fruit Ninja. Although not as crisp as a Kindle Fire (or Ipad/Galaxy Tab), the resolution (800x480 native) on games and video is very good. It's capable of 1080p depending on video/codec.

Even though it's not a dual core, the 1Ghz single core ARM Cortex A8 processor is very snappy. Overall this tablet is quite fast. For example, Angry Birds Full Edition loads up in 15 seconds, Netflix in 13 seconds. Arnova didn't cripple the Android Gingerbread 2.3 operating system. There isn't much bloat-ware installed either. It came installed with a few silly games and apps that I deleted immediately. I recommend installing Dolphin Browser HD or Dolphin Browser mini as the browser that comes with it is functional but not that great.

Because this is only a 4GB model, the micro sd expandability is great. I installed a Sandisk 32GB Class 4 and it works flawlessly. Although there is about 2.5GB of available internal storage for music/videos/storage, Arnova only allocated 225mb of internal storage for apps. Large apps/games such as Cut The Rope (21mb), Netflix (8mb), and Angry Birds (16mb) will add up fast. Make sure you're moving large apps/games to the SD card via the app manager if they are moveable. There are ways around this limitation (Link2SD app for example) but all require the device to be rooted by flashing a custom ROM. *See "Other Comments" after my review.

I really like the two front facing speakers, this is nice when watching videos without headphones. Sound quality is decent for this type of device. The kickstand is a nice touch but it's durability is suspect because it's made of plastic. It's camera isn't very good but it's really intended for video chat which I don't do/haven't tested. The headphone output sound quality is good.

Battery life is surprisingly good. Although I haven't tested it, I can play around with it off and on for 2-3 days on a single charge. It really depends on what apps/games you're running though. Make sure to turn the wifi off when not in use and dim the screen to 50% for maximum battery life.

My biggest peeve with the 7 G2 is the placement and design of the of the power adapter port and the microphone jack. First of all they are right next to each other AND they are the exact same size. More than a few times I've plugged the power adapter in at night only to wake up in the morning to a dead tablet with a power adapter plugged into the headphone jack. Although it doesn't do any damage as the jack has no internal pin to contact the inside of the power adapter, it's a foolish engineering flaw. Also because the power adapter port and headphone jack are located where you would normally hold the tablet (when viewing horizontally), it has an awkward feel when they are plugged in. It's just not a well thought out placement.

Other Comments

There is a firmware update on Arnova's site that fixes some minor bugs and allows the use of Adobe Flash 11 as well as a usb 3G wireless modem. It's a good idea to update it but make sure to back up your data first.

*Flash custom ROMs at your own risk. Although the process is easy, it's not for the NON-tech savvy type or the faint of heart. Just follow the directions exactly if you decide to do this. It took me about 20 minutes total. Another advantage of this custom firmware is that the internal storage for apps has been increased from 225mb to 450mb which is substantial. Now that my tablet is rooted I can run powerful apps such as Titanium Backup Pro and Link2SD (tricks Android into using part of the micro SD card as internal app storage) and Arctools (quickly installs/updates Google apps and Android Market). Search Google for "Arnova 7 G2 first custom firmware fully rooted by Finless" for more information and the required files. *Full credit and thanks to Finless for his work on this.

5Better Than Expected! The Kids Love It!
By martymoose
I purchased 2 of these back in November as Christmas presents for my kids, ages 3 and 7. I connected them to my home network very easily, downloaded a bunch of learning games and other games I figured they'd like before Christmas. I used the Arnova AppsLib app store, but have since added the Amazon appstore to the Arnova because apparently the AppsLib store crashed after Christmas and I wasn't able to download anything else...Amazon has more choices anyway.

Both of the kids love their little tablets. My 3 year old boy plays Angry Birds, memory games, shape, color and number games. He also watches movies...for some reason he seems to love the Buck the Bunny short movie that came preloaded. My 7 year old daughter does princess puzzles, plays Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, watches movies, makes movies with the built-in camera, and listens to her music.

BATTERY: The battery seems to be pretty good. I don't think the battery gauge is very accurate. After 2 - 4 hours it will drop to 15%, but then lasts another hour or more after that. It's a little annoying because at every percent it drops after 15% it displays a message warning you of low battery...I'm sure there has to be a setting to change the messages to start at 3% or something like that, just need to find it.

SCREEN: The screen is very bright and high resolution. Movies look great. As for the touch screen portion, the only problem my kids have is they accidentally touch the edges of the screen while holding the tablet and causes some issues. They've gotten pretty good at knowing not to touch the edges. It seems to be very responsive and smooth.

WEB BROWSING: The kids don't get on the internet, but I do. Have had no problems surfing the web. It loads pages quickly and easy to zoom in and out for reading and scrolling.

PROCESSING: It is a little slow at times opening some apps; this may because I'm trying to do too much at once...but the kids have never complained about it being too slow and does what they want.

Overall, for the price, they have been great units. The kids tell everyone they got iPads for Christmas even though I've told them over and over just to call them tablets. The only other experience they've had with tables is with my brother's iPad which the use to want to play with every time they saw him...and my iPod Touch. I'll try to update this review after a few more months of use. Would be happy to answer any questions anyone has.

5Arnova 7 G2

I got this on Dec. 16, 2011 as a Christmas gift for myself.... I do not believe it will make it under the tree. I can not put it down. I Love it and it works great for the price. I made sure I also purchased the 2 year warranty because of some of the complaints I see, but I honestly don't think I will need it.

All those complaining maybe should have spent the money for the apple stuff that comes out every couple of months...IDK

All I know is that I can browse the full web, which I wanted for my gossip sites...lol and shopping and catching up on the U.S. news. At this price any other "tablet" will give you limited web and maybe some social sites. This is full interactive internet.

It connects to wifi well and the touch screen calibrates almost every time you turn it on to make sure there is not a problem with the touch. I have not had a problem with the touch screen and I have yet to take the protective cover off.

I downloaded songs and pictures with no problem.

The only complaint I would have is that the camera is only like 2 point something megapixels...but hey that's why I own a camera...to take pictures.

I think this was money well spent.

I got mine from a Brandsmart USA Store in Florida
