5Incredible deal for this Tech!

Update! As of May 2012, after 6 months of HEAVY use, the wifi on this device has failed.

Unfortunately I can't take issue with the manufacturer because of the way my son treated this device. It was bound to break sooner or later, and the wifi failure is likely not a factory flaw but probably something my son did. For 6 months he took this tablet with him everywhere. It was in his backpack, in his pocket, or in his hands all day, every day. He took it to classes, to his friends' homes, and on the bus. I even caught him sneaking it into the bathroom to listen to it while showering. He didn't actually take the device into the shower, but I presume the steam and humidity on the counter next to the shower is enough to cause some internal damage. That's not counting the times it was accidentally dropped. So, after six months, we're calling this one dead. He may earn another in the future, but obviously not until he learns a little more responsibility.

Original review:

This was a gift for a twelve-year-old in the family. He LOVES it. He takes the Cruz tablet with him everywhere. He watches YouTube, reads e-books, and surfs the internet with it every chance he gets. I've used the device myself and watched him use it for a month now and I'm very impressed. The touchscreen is great, the video display is amazing in quality, and the sound isn't too bad considering what the device is. The battery lasts for hours. I believe the package said about 10 hours and from what I've seen, I think that's pretty close to the truth. Not once has my son complained about the battery going dead. We did have an issue when the device apparently got "stuck," and wouldn't turn on, but we hit the reset button with a toothpick and it started right up. That hasn't happened since, so it must have been a simple glitch.

It was easy to update the software and download new apps, and now my son has worked out a deal with one of his teachers to do his daily journals on the Cruz and email his work to the teacher at the end of class! Which means my 12-year-old ADD child is actually enjoying doing his school work! The Cruz also came with 12gigs of extra memory, so he can store plenty of books, music, and video for those times when he's not connected to the internet (the device has built in wi-fi but does not have 3G/cellular access.)

In all, this is a very handy and ingenious device at an unbelievable price (<$100). From what I can tell, the only real feature this is lacking that you find in more expensive devices, is cellular. Not a big loss, especially since that means there's no monthly fee. I'm tempted to download a voice over IP app and see how it works for making phone calls, but I haven't tried it yet.

3Finally 2.2!!!!
By Aaron Mathrole
Finally Velocity put an OS on here that actually makes the tablet functional!!! I have had one of these for 11 months. Its been sitting in my car, useless, for 9 of those months because 2.1 on this thing was worthless!!!. Finally I brought it in to see if there was an update, realizing it wasn't worth enough to sell. Found a 2.2 update on the Velocity Cruz website. Updated it. Now it works like charm!!!!!!

Pros: It actually works like a tablet should...FINALLY!!!!!. Good battery life. Feels solid, not cheap.

Cons: Have to double tap or even triple tap some items on the screen. Tactile function not that great. "Home", "back", and "menu" buttons ONLY light up when they are under your finger, otherwise they are virtually invisible. No camera. No Bluetooth.

3.5 stars.

42.2 OS works great!
By Jessica
I bought the Cruz T105 tablet last January. It worked ok, but progessively it has gotten slower and slower. Over the weekend (after reading the other review) I updated it with the 2.2 OS. What an amazing difference! I would suggest that anybody with the old system to update it right away, it is easy to update. Check out the Velocity Micro Cruz website for instructions. Now I am totally happy with my Cruz tablet!!!
