Great gift for kids!
By Nick
I have 2 kiddies: a boy aged 5 and a girl aged 3. Early this year, I bought a Nabi2 for little boy as a birthday gift. I thought that these 2 tots could share this pad for fun. Yet, after just several weeks, it proved that I could not be more wrong on my decision. They were at times involved in knock-down-and-drag-out fights for who should use it more and who should use it less. So, I decided to buy another one at a lower price. I was not considering buying something like an adult tablet or the toyish leappad. I was considering something developed especially for kids yet inexpensive and excellent in performance. Then I did a nerve-wracking comparison among several cherry-picked tablets on the Internet. In the final analysis, I decided to give the Apad a try, which proved later a worthy purchase despite my complaint about its kid-oriented softwares.
1. Specs:
The Nabi uses a Quad Core NVIDIA Tegra 3.0 processor while the Apad uses a Dual Core Rockchip RK3168. The Nabi is capable of Bluetooth and HDMI connectivity while the Apad is not. Yet, the Apad has 2-megapixel rear camera along with a 0.3-megapixel front camera whereas the Nabi only has a 2-megapixel front camera. My little girl really loves this dual-camera design. Well, it's evident that the Apad does pale in comparison in terms of configuration, yet, it costs about 1/3 less than the Nabi. A Dual Core 512M 8G device, I think, is all well and good enough for a 3-year-old tot.
2. Doodle and Kid Camera
These are the fave features of my 2 kids. My little girl never even feels bothered by doodling for a good whole day. Both tots like to take photos here and there.
3. Customized softwares
Kidsflix, Kidsites and Kidsware are factory-customized video, websites and apps for kids of different ages. Of course, we can download at our own convenience some videos and apps which are more attractive to kids.
4. Pre-installed list
There are many things pre-installed in the Apad, such as SlideMe, Opera, Angry Birds and Talking Tom. My 2 kids tend to love the Babybus a little more. On the whole, most of the pre-installed items combine learning and fun in an impressive way. There is a minus, though. The Apad does not come with google play store (probably for the sake of avoiding copyright infringement).
Besides, the Apad is much lighter than the Nabi. Little kids are more comfy with lightweight things, anyway. And, there is another bonus for the Apad: it is well protected with a silicone cover and its screen is protected with a screen protector. Admittedly, I would recommend this to my friends.

This is a very nice starter tablet for young children!
By jjceo (jjceo@comcast . net)
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1271RPJ45BH1T This is a full blown Android tablet that is a good starter tablet for a child. It contains a lot on entertaining activities and games for a younger child. It also provides a lot of management tools for the mom or dad to use to control the content that the child sees and uses.
I go over the tablet's controls and features in my video. The first thing that you should do is to fully charge the tablet and after it is charged it will operate for about 2 1/2 hours per charge. Setting the unit up to the WIFI was fast and easy. I do wish there was a more detailed user's manual available. For people not knowledgeable about tablets and Android systems this device can use some extra information on set up and adjusting some of the settings.
The unit is set up for a child ages 1 to possibly 5. There are a lot of apps that can be downloaded and most of them are free. This device is also a full blown Android tablet. I inserted an 8 Gig memory stick and it was immediately installed and available. You can even choose to direct the storage of the apps to the SD card. When you down load an app you can see what permissions they are asking for and whether you want your children to be able to use the app or not. The tablet is powerful enough that I was able to download the Kindle reading app and the Kindle Store app and download many of the apps that I own onto this tablet. This means that as your child grows you can continue to expand the tablet to extend its useful life. I could see all of my 800 Amazon books and also down load popular kid's games like MineCraft.
For a parent's set up you can program the child's access time, usage, content filtering and application restriction and more. Children can draw, listen to music, read or listen to books, watch films and visit kid's web sites. My video shows how to use the tablet and set up some apps. This is a powerful device and I could not cover all of the details that this tablet can do. The CPU processor is reasonably fast and it works well. I show how to take photos in the video.
What's in the box?
* A quick start up guide
* A microfiber cleaning cloth
* A screen protector
* The 7 inch tablet that weighs 10 and ¾ ounces
* A charging adapter that operates on 100 to 240 VAC and 50/60 Hz. It is UL approved and the length from the AC wall plugs to the end of the cable is 51 inches. The voltage output is 5 VDC at 2 Amps.
* A connection cable that you can use to connect the tablet to your computer that is 40 inches long.
* A warranty card
* A very nice silicone case to protect the tablet from bumps and drops. When it is installed on the tablet the combination weighs 14 and 3/8 ounces.
The features of the tablet:
* Dual system operation with one level for the parents to act as the tablet's administrator and the other level for the children.
* Dual core CPU
* 8 GB of storage built in
* High resolution 1024x 600 pixel screen
* SD card slot for memory expansion. (this was fast and easy to use)
* 512K RAM memory
* Android operating system 4.2
* A front facing camera with 0.3 Mega pixel and a rear facing camera with 2.1 Mega pixel resolution
* Very nice silicone case
* WIFI built in and easy to set up
* Tons of access to children's apps, games, puzzles, and learning tools!
* The unit has the ability to use plug in earphones.
* The ability to take good quality photos and videos.
* A built in speaker for music and audio story books to be heard
Cons that I have identified:
* I have had to press the reset button multiple times to reset the system.
* While playing a child's space shoot-em-up game I am getting pop up ads for cars, cameras, plumbers and purchasing retirement plans and the end of every game. I have not found any way to turn off the pop up ads except to turn off the WIFI when a child is playing the games.
* The tablet is not compatible with Google play as it is set up to use the SlideMe store. This cannot be changed.
I gave this product a 5 star rating as it is an excellent beginning tablet for a child. I will be asking the developer how to stop the pop up ads as I believe that these types of things should not happen on a tablet for a child. At worst case I know that I could at least disable the WIFI while they are using it.
I was supplied with a sample of this product for test and evaluation and I promised to provide a fair and honest review.

"Fun for my kids and peace of mind for me"
By Natasha JD
For months now my kids have been pleading with me to buy them a tablet because all their other friends have one. I wasn't sure how this would affect their studies. So I started researching the products available in the market and was genuinely shocked to find out there was one where as a parent I could control what my children do on the tablet. Through the Application Restriction, Time Management, Usage Analysis and Content Safety Filtering applications on the Apad tablet, I am able to do just that. I can also use the remote control under the Free Cloud Service to turn off the tablet or change the settings when I feel that the children are spending too much time on it. It also generates a report so that I can monitor my children's account without being outright nosy! And what's more, my children are very happy with it. They love it and so do I!
