What is IPS?

IPS stands for in-plane switching. An IPS-LCD is a type of thin display that offers better viewing angles than TFT-LCDs. IPS-LCDs feature two transistors for each pixel, where TFT-LCDs use just one. This requires a more powerful backlight, which delivers more accurate colors, and allows the screen to be viewed from a wider angle. The downside is that an IPS-LCD may consume more power than a TFT-LCD. IPS-LCDs typically are found on high-end cell phones and portable devices. Apple's iPhone and iPad both feature IPS-LCDs, so does Nexus 7 tablet.

5R8 is an awesome tablet!
By Vivian
My summary, if you want to save sometime reading the whole thing:

Big Positive: this Dragon Touch Elite R8 has a razor-sharp HD screen, slight weight, ultra-smooth performance, satisfying battery life, micro SD, and this price makes it an affordable “Android iPad mini” on the market.

So-so: Android 4.3 is not available on it for now. Compared to other tablets, the back is missing the soft grippy texture which I like, screen colors are bright but a little accuracy lack, charging the tablet takes a bit long.

Overall: Astonishing performance and affordable price gives this tablet the talent to be a shiny star in the market.

Most people like iPad mini because it is small enough to hold in one hand and powerful enough for daily entertainment. I can not believe my eyes when I saw the pictures on Amazon because this is just like an iPad mini, which turns out to be true. The design of this tablet is a replication of iPad mini, without the physical home button. When I turned it on, the screen does show a iPadmini-like performance. The resolution is the same as iPad mini (1024x768), with this IPS display, the brightness, contrast and shapeness is what I would say beyond compare of the other Android tablets I have ever seen. I do not own an iPad mini, but my friend does. The brightness of this Dragon Touch R8 is better than iPad mini while the accuracy of the colors is not as splendid as the iPad mini, which is kind of hard to notice unless you have both with the same picture in hand.

This R8 has a Quad Core processor each running at 1.8GHz, which is a higher total calculation frequency than iPad mini. Moreover, this tablet is equipped with 1GB RAM to accelerate loading and running of apps, compared to 512MB from iPad mini. I appreciate the system integration and optimization work from apple. Because it makes a dual-core processor carry-out an ultra-smooth performance. The android system runs smoothly on R8, thanks to the high frequency of the quad-core processor. In my opinion, low budget android tablets usually have 0% system optimization and no matter how good the hardware is, the performance is 100% of time worse than iOS tablets. For this one, I can see the system optimization effort as in 3 hours of using, I do not experience any major delays in loading and running different applications while keeping several apps running in the background. However, the higher-frequency CPU and bigger RAM consume battery life faster than iPad mini. So I would not say that this tablet makes android 4.2 beats iOS 6. But I can say that this is a satisfying Android experience and I am happy with it. As always, I recommend an “app killer” app to keep background running apps managed to save battery life and total performance. I also used “Vellamo” benchmark to test the quality of it, 1757 for HTML5 browsing and 519 for hardware performance, which means this tablet is in the top-5 list among the competitors.

As for the details of this Dragon Touch R8, it does show a little compromise to reflect the budget; a 0.3MP front facing camera is not as sharp as iPad mini’s but good enough for video chatting; the rear camera has 2.0 Mega pixels as the same of iPad mini’s but the sharpness is still not as good. If you are an “instragram” addict I would recommend you to do that on your iPhone and you would get more followers. If you just need to photo daily scenarios and post on facebook, the R8 is good enough. The back cover is metal, but I prefer rubber like material. The micro-SD card slot support 32GB sd card, which cost around $20-25 on Amazon, so total storage would not be a problem. R8 has a mini HDMI port so you can browse the display on you home TV and watch youtube with better resolutions. Android 4.2 does offer more user-friendly interface when connected with your laptop so you can search and install apps through your PC when you need a bigger screen, move and store pictures and files. Customer service says Android 4.3 is on its way to be upgraded on R8, and I am looking forward to it. The usb connection does give you more freedom to use keyboard, mouse and external storage.

As for now, I am impressed of this “Android iPad mini”. It is affordable, nice and easy to use, and a great quality/budget choice. I will update more whenever new things show up.

3Disappointed
By Dave
Received my tablet today. First thing, I noticed the box was dirty and dented. After opening the box and taking out the tablet, I found a defect on the screen. When I turned on the tablet it was very difficult to see the defect but it was there none the less. I opened the instructions and saw that I was supposed to charge the tablet for 10 hours before use. When I plugged it in, I found that it was fully charged. I believe I was sent a tablet that had been returned for the screen defect. Something to consider when dealing with this supplier. I will be returning this tablet, I haven't yet decided on an exchange or refund.

I ordered another tablet as exchange wasn't a choice. Pleased with this one. Delivery time was awesome. Tablet works well, just learning the operation at present. The screen looks very good. I have set up facebook, and email to date. I've increased my rating to 3 stars reflecting an average of the two experiences.

5Better than the iPad Mini
By Dchomiez15
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RF4LBNR1AWWHM When I first got my hands on this tablet I didn't think this was going to be a great tablet. I was so wrong. The R8 really impressed me. It has a nice aluminum back. This tablet also has a great display. It has the same display as the iPad Mini. It also has a great battery life. It`s also running android 4.2.2. The R8 beat the iPad mini in a speed comparison.

Pros:
Nice screen size.
Screen display is impressive. (Nexus 7 Second gen display is nicer)
Great battery life
Looks just like the white iPad mini
Slightly faster than the iPad mini
Onscreen volume control
Very affordable tablet
Great Specs for the Price

Cons:
The side buttons that some time to get use too.

Comparison between R8 and iPad Mini

R8:Quad Core x4

iPad Mini: Core A5

R8: 1GB of Ram

iPad Mini:512MB of Ram

R8:1024x768 IPS

iPad Mini:1024x768 IPS

Overall I think this is a great tablet and the price makes it even better.
